Pretend Ginger Bread Decorations

Charlie's Kitchen

I've been at it again .... busy making tree decorations for Fox Project to sell at the Christmas Market.

These are pretty easy to make and the ingredients are 'dirt' cheap ..... I'll let you know what I used because it's a good activity to do with kids.

You'll need: Some plain flour, some salt, some vegetable oil and if you want to make them smell nice some mixed spices!

I'm using my 'bespoke' foxy biscuit cutter that I had especially made, but there are loads of different shapes on the market and they usually only cost about 99p.

Some of my biscuit cutters!

It doesn't matter how much you use, just make sure you get the ingredients in the right measures.  So get yourself a cup and measure out as follows:

Half a cup of salt
One whole cup of flour
Half a cup of water

I'm using my favourite bunny cup ...........

Next ..... sieve the flour in to a big mixing bowl to get the lumps out, add the salt and a big dollop of mixed spice.

Granny's big old mixing bowl is just the ticket
for this sort of job!

Then ..... add the water and a drizzle of vegetable oil and stir it around.

Next you have to get your paws in and gather it in to a ball shape.

Knead the dough for 10 minutes to make sure all the ingredients are stuck together.  It's hard work but the vegetable oil makes your paws nice and soft!

Once you've done that, you can go and have a nice cup of tea and leave the dough to 'rest' in the bowl for 20 minutes.

Me and Teddy decided to have a quick game of 'Dr Who' instead.

I'm dressed up as a Dalek ...... 'gawd' knows what Teddy was thinking!

Next job is to roll out the dough, so you will need to cover a pastry board with flour and get a rolling pin.

Roll out the dough to the thickness of a £1 coin.

Then start cutting your shapes.

Have a tray ready covered with baking paper to put your cut out shapes on.  If you don't use baking paper the shapes will stick to your tray.

...... love cutting!

I used a cocktail stick to decorate my foxy shapes with some dots, then used dried cloves for the eyes and noses!

Make sure you put a hole in the top of the shape so that you can hang a ribbon through it.

Now ......... a lot of recipes on the internet say that you can either cook your shapes on a very low heat for 4 hours, or leave them to 'air dry' for 2 days.  I left mine to 'air dry' because it's greener than using the gas oven.  I found that my decorations took 4 days to dry.  I turned them over every day to make sure both sides dried equally.

Then I painted them with food colouring to make them look like Ginger Bread and joined my dots up with some white poster paint.

If you buy some food colouring please choose the ones that don't contain beetles, because it's not very nice squashing beetles just to get food colouring!

Then I left them on the warm radiator for a couple of hours, just to have a final dry out.

I finished my decorations by painting with poster varnish to make them shiny and sprinkled them with fairy dust to make them sparkle.

Then I threaded through some lovely green and red ribbons.

You don't have to varnish your decorations, but if you do please do it in a well ventilated area, as some varnishes are a bit 'whiffy'.   It's probably best for adults to do the varnishing part of the job!

Teddy gave me a hand to display the finished decorations.

Yeah ...... pass it up here Teds mate!

I'm hoping the decorations will sell well at the Christmas market!

Mange is an environmental parasite that is terribly painful,
and can kill foxes.  But, it is treatable.

This is Scatty when she was first rescued by Fox Project.

This is Scatty five months later, back on her home territory.

It took three weeks and two injections to cure Scatty.

It's not that hard, it just takes patience, love and a bit of cash!

Advent Calendar - FREE STUFF

Right .......
we've got 4 days to go and then it's the big countdown to Christmas!

I've been looking around the shops for a suitable advent calendar.

Cute teddy but I really don't like
calendars with advertising on them!

The chocolate ones smell nice, but I decided to save my pennies, design my own calendar and buy a tin of sweets instead!

So I knocked up a bit of foxy art work!

Think I might call her Diana after my foxy friend.

Then set about designing a calendar.

You can make one too ...... just click on the link and press print:

The document has 6 pages ...... so make sure you have enough paper in your printer!

Get all your equipment together.  You will need a needle and cotton, some card (cereal packet will do), sticky tape, scissors and either magnetic tape or a hole punch and a piece of ribbon.

Hmm ... need some sticky tape and scissors!

Cut out the calendar and stick it firmly on the piece of card.

Then put it under some heavy books to dry whilst you cut out the numbers.

Now you need to get your needle and make holes where the dots are on the foxy calendar.

Then, firmly hold the first number in place and stick the needle through the calendar again to get the holes in the right place.

Mind your fingers when you do this .....
needles can be blooming sharp!

Gather all your numbers together, and a few at a time, using number 1 as a guide, make holes in all the rest of them.

When you have done that, get a length of cotton and fold it double, then thread it on your needle and fold it again so you have 4 strands.  Tie a big knot in the end and starting from the back, thread it through your calendar like this.  You may have to thread one number at a time but it shouldn't take long.

Once you have all the numbers threaded pull the cotton really tight and fasten it at the back with some sticky tape.

If you want a hanging calendar you can punch a hole in the top and thread ribbon through it, but I decided to make mine in to a fridge magnet.

Rolls of magnetic tape like this cost about 99p from
a craft shop.  Just peel the backing paper off and
stick a couple of bits to your calendar top and bottom.

Job done ...... here's the finished calendar up on the fridge, all ready to go!

After all that hard work it's time to tuck in to those sweets!

Can't find any purple ones!

Christmas Tree Decorations - BUY STUFF

Love it or hate it ....... Christmas is coming!

....... and if you are going to decorate a Christmas tree, what better way than to adorn it with decorations that support charity!

I've been really busy over the past few weeks, making Christmas Decorations to sell for 'The Fox Project  Southern Wildlife Ambulance Network'

I had a rummage around a few local charity shops to find some second hand fabrics.  I'm a big fan of re-cycling and supporting local charities!

.... found a lovely tweed skirt and some wool scarves.

I made a little heart template and cut out some shapes with my pinking sheers.

....  love cutting!

Time to get sewing and stuffing.

They didn't look very foxy ..... so I decided to make some polymer clay foxy faces to sew on the front.

In my excitement to get working with the clay I unintentionally tore through the cooking instructions on the wrapper, so I had to go and ask someone who would know how long my foxy faces would take to cook.

Pussy ....... do you know how long I should bung my
foxy faces in the oven for?

Right ..... Pussy says give it 30 minutes on really low, so here goes with the timer.

..... she really is one clever Puss .....
If it had been left to me I'd have whacked it up to full blast,
gone for a sniff down the local park for an hour and
burnt the lot to a crisp!

Blimey ..... it's hot in there .....  better be careful!

Time for a cuppa whilst the cooker is doing its thing.

Lovely!

Here's a few photos of my finished decorations ..... think they turned out pretty good in the end.

I made some jingly ones as well as fabric hearts.

If you would like to buy any of my items, check out my Etsy shop!

My friend Diana has already bought some off me and is proudly displaying them on her mantle piece!

Diana and the Decorations
Sounds like a 60's pop group!

This is Tenner .....

Intelligent and reserved by nature, he was an orphaned cub that was

a perfect prospect for release, until Fox Project discovered
he was partially sighted.
At that point, captivity being his only option,
Fox Project had to encourage him to accept human company.

Happily he went in to long term care and adapted well to his
new circumstances with new fox friends.
He is playful and lively.

Tenner earned his name when he arrived with a ten pound donation from his finder.

Love, as always, Charlie xx
